First case related to Covid-19 under the MNE Guidelines

17 April 2020

UNI Global Union and affiliated unions filed a specific instance with the France National Contact Point of the OECD.  UNI Global Union is the umbrella organisation for the service sector representing 20 million workers in 150 countries.  The submission under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises marks the first health and safety complaint in the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the complaint against French communications operator, Teleperformance, UNI Global Union alleges health and safety measures for due diligence remain inadequate at Teleperformance telecommunications centres in multiple countries.

The MNE operates call centres around the world with 331,000 workers.  The multinational posted  €1.13 billion EBITDA on €5.3 billion revenue in 2019. Twenty-six percent of revenue came from ten top government and corporate clients.

The TUAC urges the French NCP and the OECD to ensure the swiftest and most effective resolution of the issues raised by the union.

More broadly, the global scope and potential scale for eminent impacts related to the global effort to combat the Covid-19 pandemic requires a global forum for dialogue.  The OECD is in the best position to provide that forum. For its part, the TUAC has issued a recommendation on Making Good Use of the Guidelines in Covid-19 response.
